Tarskavaig is a traditional Hebridean crofting township located on the pristine southern side of the Sleat Peninsula, the gateway to Skye. The Calmac ferry service operates out of Mallaig, on the mainland, to Armadale port, just 8 miles from our cottage, and the elegantly arching Skye Bridge is 26 miles from the township. From the main A851 which runs from Armadale to Broadford you take the dramatic ‘loop road’ which wends its way with style over the heathery moor and through secret valleys, dips down to the shore in several places and repeatedly rewards you with breathtaking views. The hills and bends require maximum concentration and a sedate pace – which is only right given the grazing sheep, deer and single track – there are lots of good passing places.
Tarskavaig was the Scottish finalist in Channel Four’s ‘Village of the Year’ in 2018; which is a remarkable feat for a tiny township with no commercial outlets and a population of barely 60! The judges described our location as ‘stunning and unique’ and offering a lifestyle ‘to dream of!’
The views of the Cuillin Ridge across Loch Eishort and the Island of Rum on the horizon are remarkable, and much photographed and painted. If you are interested in a Photographic Tuition Break please visit skyephotographs.com as Graham is a professional landscape photographer.
Niki, from USA, June 2018 ‘ We had the most FANTASTIC stay at Penny's lovely house. The stunning drive alone was one of our favourite parts of the trip! Penny and Graham were so welcoming and we absolutely loved staying with them. From the breakfast to the tips of where to visit to the friendly discussions, we really loved our time with them! I would absolutely recommend this home to anyone interested in seeing a truly beautiful, quiet and homey part of Skye!’
David, from Spain, May 2018 ‘ Our stay at Burnbank Cottage has been lovely. Both Penny and Graham are great hosts and make us feel like home. Tarskavaig is a beautiful place where you can disconnect from your daily life and enjoy a moment for yourself. Great starting point for exploring the south of Skye and quite convenient if you are arriving to the island by ferry. Ask your hosts for places to visit, Graham will give you even a virtual tour to some of the wonderful places that are nearby!’
Marjorie, from Sweden, October 2017 ‘ If you want to escape, this is the place for you. I loved the lack of internet and mobile reception! Penny and Graham are perfect hosts, friendly, welcoming and helpful, full of useful information about the area. The accommodation is lovely, clean, comfy and cosy. Breakfast was great too! Thanks again.’
Wendy, from UK, September 2017 ‘Penny has created an oasis of calm. Lovely twin room with en-suite facilities. Lots of charm and lovely gestures like the little treats when you arrive. Very remote but I am so glad we stayed here rather than in a town as I felt we got to see the real Skye. Breakfast is first class with all needs catered for. Highly recommended.’
Jennifer, from Germany, July 2017 ‘ Lovely cottage in a beautiful location. Friendly and welcoming hosts who gave us lots of helpful tips, and a very comfortable room. Everything was spotlessly clean and there were lots of thoughtful touches in the room. The breakfast was fantastic! We really enjoyed our stay.’
Chelsy, from NZ, July 2016 ‘ Amazing place to stay it was quiet, peaceful, relaxing and the breakfast was so lovely eating in the sun room. Very clean and comfortable. Penny and Graham were great and helped us figure out our plans for venturing around Isle of Skye. Highly recommended!’
Lutz, from Germany, July 2016 ‘ The stay at Penny’ House has been outstanding. The area at the coast is breathtaking. Our Room was comfortable and the breakfast in the morning was various jams, cheeses, cereals, toast, fruit salad, freshly brewed coffee - whatever you want, you get it. Penny and Graham were very helpful with tips concerning the Isle of Skye and Graham is an excellent photographer with the specialty of 360 degree photos. He didn't mention but he was a category winner in 2015 of the "Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year" you must have a look at his wonderful pictures! Both are wonderful hosts and we can highly recommend this accommodation! And thank you, Penny and Graham!’
